I would like to post some random thoughts about the recent request in the MLP-VectorClub. In summery, the club is now asking artists to release their source/vector files like .SVG or .PSD along with the usual PNG submissions. This may sound like a great idea at first, since it is a vector club, and a .PNG is obviously not a vector, however my answer to this new request is a clear no.
First off, this is not about some weird bucked up copyright idea, I don't claim ownership for any of my Deviations, including the drawings and vectors I did from scratch.
(I never asked people to credit me or to link back to my DA when you use one of my Deviations. My policy is, and always will be to use my art however you may want! Except for the requests I did for Tygerbug, of course) .
The reasons I am against this request by MLP-VectorClub is because I am not willing to contribute into some kind of giant "pony creator" or to feed someones rubber band. No matter how complex a picture is, vectoring takes a lot of time and care if you want a decent result! I feel that providing the source files will allow people the ability to have access free bases that can provide quick one-click recolors. It will also allow people the ability to cheat; the ability to quick copy pre-made vectored paths "borrowed" from what would possibly my source image file.
In summery, It's absolutely impossible to control what people do with your source files once you've uploaded them, and for that reason under most situations, I decline to upload my source files to the public. Keep in mind, the pictures and files uploaded to DA is not just available to DA or the VectorClub, It is now easily accessed by anyone on the internet. Even if admins of the club keep a close eye on what is submitted, the smallest little detail, such as a buckle on an arm can easily be copied, and then ever so slightly modified to allow the look of a brand new, non copied vector. Next is the possibility to modify shapes/colors. I don't want to sound rude, but, no one fixes my vectors except for myself. If you think my work sucks, fine, just trace, modify, or re-color it by yourself and make it better, or, EVEN BETTER, give me some suggestions! Tell me how to improve my work! I would really appreciate it!
I'm always happy to help people out, if someone asks me to resize a picture, that is no problem! If someone really wants an .SVG, sure! All you got to do is simply leave me a comment, or even send me a note! Odds are, I won't say no! I make vectors, and in my mind, declining use of something that isn't even mine for your use is just not right. I just don't want to upload my source files to the general public of the Internet.
Let it also be known, it's not my intention for this entry to attack, or extend any hate towards the VectorClub for this new request of theirs. It's a great group run by awesome people, and if you're looking for a high-quality vector, it is definitely the best place for you to go!
